The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has always held a special place in the hearts of the Boeck family. From cheering on the Mocs as students to watching their son, Ty, dominate on the field, UTC has been a constant source of pride, community and cherished memories.

Troy Boeck (’91) began his journey at UTC in 1986, coming from Evans High School near Augusta, GA. Reflecting on his time, he shares, “I really enjoyed football; I had some excellent coaches, and the program was good during those years.” As a business major, Troy lived in “The Village,” now known as the Boling Apartments. His college life revolved around sports, a passion he carried throughout his time at UTC.

Karin Boeck (’91) joined UTC a year later, in 1987, as a biology major and basketball player. Like Troy, she also lived in The Village. Their paths crossed at the “training table,” the dining facility for athletes. “We met during her first week on campus and have been together ever since,” Troy reminisces. The couple married in 1993 while Karin was in medical school at the University of Tennessee at Memphis. This month, they celebrate 31 years of marriage.

Their son Ty Boeck (’23) continued the family legacy with his own athletic journey. Ty excelled at Soddy Daisy High School, achieving All-State honors in football and winning the state championship in wrestling. He joined UTC during Tom Arth’s tenure and thrived under Coach Rusty Wright’s leadership, becoming a four-time All-Conference player during his football career.

It was an absolute joy to watch him [Ty] play, I probably enjoyed that more than playing myself, and I loved playing.

“One of my favorite moments was when Ty passed me on the all-time tackles list,” Troy recalls. “I was both angry and elated. My competitive nature wanted my name above his, but Ty was too good for that.” Watching Ty play brought immense joy to Troy, a feeling that surpassed his own playing days.

After graduation, Ty had a tryout with the Colts and is now working in North Carolina for Stewart Haas Racing as a member of their pit crew. “He now ‘plays in the road’ for a living,” Troy jokes, highlighting Ty’s transition from the football field to the fast-paced world of NASCAR.

The Boeck family’s connection to UTC remains strong. Troy, now a high school coach, often encourages his athletes to consider UTC. Karin, a physician, has seen many UTC graduates come through her practice. The couple frequently attends games, enjoying the gameday energy and the opportunity to reconnect with old friends.

“We often tell our friends about our experiences at UTC,” Troy says. “The next time you attend a game and see a big ugly guy hanging out with his beautiful lady and his beautiful daughter, come say hello.”
